From 25 to 29 November 2025, representatives of the Department of Electric Power Supply of the Educational and Scientific Institute of Energy Engineering of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute took part in the On-Campus DAAD MERIT-Ukraine Energy Workshop, held at Leibniz Universität Hannover (LUH), one of Germany’s leading technical universities. The program was intensive and combined presentations, laboratory visits, discussions on joint educational programs, as well as the development of areas for scientific cooperation in energy, electric power systems, power electronics, hydrogen technologies, and high-voltage engineering. Participants learned about the history and structure of LUH, the activities of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, the LiFe2050 Energy Research Center, and the double-degree program “Renewable Energy and Electrical Power Engineering.” Special attention was devoted to the organization of the educational process, academic mobility, and the presentation of the experience of the first KPI student currently studying at LUH within the exchange program.
A significant part of the workshop program included visits to the Institute of Drive Systems and Power Electronics (IAL) and the Institute of Electric Power Systems (IfES). During laboratory tours and discussions, participants were presented with state-of-the-art research in electrical machines, power electronics, electric drives, energy storage systems, grid solutions, hydrogen technologies, and high-voltage engineering. They had the opportunity to visit hydrogen, grid, and high-voltage laboratories, and to explore approaches to equipment diagnostics, condition monitoring, transient analysis, and asset management for power systems. Representatives from Kyiv, Lviv, and Mykolaiv presented their developments in the fields of electric power engineering, electrical networks, high-voltage technology, and power electronics, forming the basis for joint research topics and future collaborative projects.
Another part of the program involved visits to research infrastructure in the fields of energy and mechanical engineering, including the GeCoLab generator-converter test stand, the Dynamics of Energy Conversion (DEC) research network, and laboratories of turbomachinery, technical combustion, and thermodynamics at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. These visits enabled participants to observe examples of integrating electrical and mechanical solutions for modern energy systems.
The workshop became an important step toward deepening the partnership between KPI and Leibniz Universität Hannover, defining joint research directions in sustainable energy systems, smart grids, hydrogen technologies, energy storage, and high-voltage engineering, as well as supporting the development of academic mobility programs and new joint educational initiatives.
The Department of Electric Power Supply was represented by:
Head of Department Olena BORYCHENKO, Academic Mobility Coordinator Yuliia CHERNETSKA, and Associate Professors Olena YARMOLIUK, Yurii VEREMIICHUK, and Ivan PRYTYSKACH. The Department continues to expand international cooperation, shaping modern approaches to the development of energy education and science and strengthening Ukraine’s energy resilience.
