Practical Training at the Second-cycle (Professional Master’s) Level
Practical training at the second-cycle (professional master’s) level forms part of the educational and professional master’s programmes. The purpose of practical training is to systematise, broaden and consolidate professional knowledge in preparation for independent work as an engineer or a researcher in a laboratory or institute, in line with the qualification requirements. It develops the ability to formulate tasks, analyse findings and draw conclusions, and provides experience of independent, innovative professional practice. During practical training, students must collect factual data and conduct the practical investigations required for their dissertation topic, providing an innovative solution to an applied problem using established theories and methods. Examples include:
– assessing the performance of SmartLight systems in an electricity market environment;
– assessing reliability indicators for a power supply system with distributed generation;
– modernising or improving the efficiency of a distribution system operator’s networks, including small distribution systems, through the Smart Grid concept;
– a flexible electricity generation system with centralised energy storage;
– an automated advanced monitoring and commercial metering system;
– designing power converter controls for a photovoltaic installation within a microgrid;
– a smart measurement and energy monitoring system for a local system with flexible generation;
– efficient energy supply for a local facility or smart building using alternative energy sources;
– developing a system to monitor the results of measures to improve electricity-use efficiency.
The practical training placement is determined by the dissertation topic, selected by the student and supervisor in accordance with the research direction and the feasibility of the work.
The main objectives of practical training are:
– gaining experience in solving complex industry problems and deepening theoretical and practical knowledge of energy supply system design and research;
– becoming familiar with project, technical and engineering design documentation;
– mastering advanced technological equipment principles and the procedures for implementing scientific and engineering innovations;
– learning about the organisation of research, patent work and inventive activity;
– studying engineering psychology, the organisation of engineering work in companies and environmental protection measures;
– developing the ability to generalise, systematise, consolidate and deepen theoretical knowledge and to apply mathematical methods and computing to energy supply system design and research;
– acquiring professional, organisational and team development knowledge and skills;
– developing an understanding and acceptance of social responsibility for professional decisions.
Practical training takes place at modern enterprises and organisations. Igor Sikorsky KPI has signed memoranda and cooperation agreements with leading companies and organisations, listed here. The list of practical training providers is approved at a Department of Power Supply meeting.
